A haiku virgin? Well, I guess we all get jaded sometime.
yes, i meant that i’d never written a haiku before this one.
sarah

Have you ever wondered why Japanese men do not like camelias? I was reminded when you said “winter roses sag”.
I actually have plenty of roses on my balcony. Do have to water them a lot, though. And pare them. And admire them!
Cheers,
Robert-Gilles
i had no idea that japanese men did not like camelias. though these roses look like camelias they are roses and they’ve the thorns to prove it. actually, they are my housemates roses and he does nothing to care for them - hence the poem. i must save them regularly or they waste away to no one’s pleasure.

Dear sarah!
Greetings again!
Thanks for visiting my blog!
Japanese usually dislike camelias because they take a long time to die away, bending down like necks to be cut by the sword.
Samurais venerated cherry blossoms because they “died” in full glory as opposed to camelias who “lingered” in decay!
Cheers,
Robert-Gilles
robert, that is very interesting because isn’t it the asian cultures that teach patience and endurance? yet they cannot bear to let a poor flower end its existence in its own way. now that is what we call irony.
