Family Tree

I know you love me
but you don’t like me
You’ve got plans
and getting me in
is a squeeze

I’ll give you credit
for trying
doing your duty
pretending

We’re strung together
through shared DNA
not the love
of closeknit spirits

A mishap
of mutual genes
a mish-mosh
of family ties

I know you love me
because you have to
but I wish
you knew me because
we were friends.

    Family Trees?
That reminds me of a gentleman in Canada who searched about my family name all over the world as over 90% had to leave France at the beginning of the 18th Century because of the Revocation of the Edict of nantes by Louis the XIVth. He was genuinely glad to discover his namesake in Japan!
Here in Japan, family trees are not so popular, although easier to establish than in other countries as shown by a local Sake Brewery which came up with one dating back to 1630 when I interviewed them!
Maybe, a “Friends Tree” could prove a great search as compared to a “Family Tree”!
    Intriguing soul-searching poem!
Take good care of yourself “Sarah”!

    hi robert,
good to see you again. i like your idea of a friend’s tree. it would be a lovely thing to contruct and have in the entryway of my house.

take good care of yourself too.

This reminds me of nearly every Christmas in our family. There always seems to be that struggle between the groups and someone is always feeling put out. It really is easier with friends over family sometimes.

you’re right, jennifer. friends are easy and fun and you don’t usually have the obligatory aspects with them. with family it seems a whole different expectation.

I once read that family is God’s way of making us live with people we wouldn’t otherwise live with.

    hi ozy,
i certainly think it’s god’s way of having a good laugh. :) sarah

This makes me sigh too. So my late grandmother’s saying always rings true with me and did so in your poetry…you can love someone but hate their damnable characterstics :-) Hugs Sarah…good to be with you again. Ali

your grandmother was a wise woma indeed. and so right.
