Poems in my Head
I write poems in my head
walking the dog
mind adrift and inattentive
I make up ryhme
simile, metaphor, imagery
I see the heartbeat
as colors shift and open their eyes
and remember mother’s admonitions
still trying to sink into
my pardigm of self
birds rattle and shriek
and dive for seed, worms, bugs
words bang aginst the
walls inside my head
looking for doors to let
them out
seraching out windows
to let in the light
and they die in the darkness
unsaid
