Goth

Posted at 12:54 pm under Poetry, original fiction, writing

All grown up
without a clue
chugging Starbuck’s
and smoking too

Cynical glances
shot my way
Snickers, snatters
hormonal bluejays

Just too hip
for meager words
dressed in black
like the rest of the herd

Tittering giggles
of useless minds
addled with youth
and drinking cheap wine.

This was great. So right on. And it could be said for any fashion/thought/music trend young people get in to.

One of my sisters was a goth teen.
We had to listen to her music and try not to stare at her more radical friends in horror- although some of them were actually very cool thoughts.

It is so dark. And for me to say a thing is dark means it is a super, void of light, kind of dark.

Even though it strikes me, i think it’s brave to go outside like that. What gets me is seeing people in their thirties and forties still going all out with the costuming aspect, playing Vampire and drinking absinthe. One of my sister’s friends- one of the cool ones- is now in her thirties, married and has kids and she is still “fringe”- but in a mature way, you know what i mean?

    lol christine,
i had no idea this would illicit such a response. it’s interesting that your sister was a goth teen, i can imagine it was quite an adventure for your family. this particular poem was inspired by the many goth children who hang at the local starbuck’s - i always wonder what they will be like ten years from now. thanks for reading.

ps: and i miss your writing, when will we have something new? soon i hope.

This is really good and made me think of a great line I read yesterday over at Tauken -
    http://www.whitihereaka.wordpress.com/2008/05/15/girl-with-moxie

“Perhaps goths and their watered down progeny aren’t so nihilistic after all - constant reapplication of ruby red lipstick is surely an act of hope.”

she may have a point, simonne. lol.

My folks were glad that I wasn’t a goth teen, but rather a mere pothead. Yes, they thought that was actually better.
Coffee and smokes .. mmm, so tasty.

i somehow can’t imagine you going goth, red. maybe it’s the red hair or something more earthy about you. if given the choice between goth and pothead, as a parent, i might have opted for pothead too. :) sarah

Like any other “fashion” it is populated by sheep. Akin to punk or grung or any other “renegade” appearance it has still become an exclusive club so like (un)minded youth may get together and look down upon others. Remember the hippie movement? Just like that. It all starts with true radicals making actual revolutionary statements that young people are automatically attracted to and before you know it you have a culture of wannabes and posers who haven’t the foggiest idea what they are about. In their efforts to be differant they flock together like sheep.

i’m surprised this has generated so much dialogue. but to your point, yes, i think you’re right - but i also think part of it is that especially teens are on a quest for their identity and at the same time want to belong. don’t you?

i wouldn’t say sheep, exactly. i mean people hang with those they’ve things in common with. We all do that. But i do like and agree with the rest of it- the rebellious beginnings then the hangers-on who like the music or clothes.

    interesting debate.

What a sheltered life you have lived. Google Boone’s Farm and you will find out all about the crazee tastee nector that is Boone’s Farm Wine.

you know, i wondered if you meant that - then i thought maybe it was a musical group i had never heard of.

You make it look easy, taking on poetry on Goths, and you marvel me with your musicality. The pic is fantastically funny. Great, great.

hi tom! and thank you - sometimes the words just come. in this case, they did.

I absolutely agree with Ozymandiaz on this. You could add the so-called “Emo” girls to this category. They really don’t seem to understand that in their attempt to be different they are really all the same.

i think i’ll leave this to ozy to respond to.

Sarah, you really hit the nail on the head with this one. I love the observations you make, and you really put the reader right there with you standing in line at Starbucks watching these kids.

The following might be your single best piece of writing I have encountered yet:

    Cynical glances
    shot my way
    Snickers, snatters
    hormonal bluejays

    hi david,
thank you for such a nice compliment - sorry but i’ve been out of town, tending to a sick friend. hope you are well.
