Sarah, you really hit the nail on the head with this one. I love the observations you make, and you really put the reader right there with you standing in line at Starbucks watching these kids.

t all starts with true radicals making actual revolutionary statements that young people are automatically attracted to and before you know it you have a culture of wannabes and posers who haven’t the foggiest idea what they are about. In their efforts to be differant they flock together like sheep.

I absolutely agree with Ozymandiaz on this. You could add the so-called “Emo” girls to this category. They really don’t seem to understand that in their attempt to be different they are really all the same.

i wouldn’t say sheep, exactly. i mean people hang with those they’ve things in common with. We all do that. But i do like and agree with the rest of it- the rebellious beginnings then the hangers-on who like the music or clothes.

Like any other “fashion” it is populated by sheep. Akin to punk or grung or any other “renegade” appearance it has still become an exclusive club so like (un)minded youth may get together and look down upon others. Remember the hippie movement? Just like that. i’m surprised this has generated so much dialogue. but to your point, yes, i think you’re right - but i also think part of it is that especially teens are on a quest for their identity and at the same time want to belong. don’t you?

My folks were glad that I wasn’t a goth teen, but rather a mere pothead. Yes, they thought that was actually better.
Coffee and smokes .. mmm, so tasty.

i somehow can’t imagine you going goth, red. maybe it’s the red hair or something more earthy about you. if given the choice between goth and pothead, as a parent, i might have opted for pothead too. sarah

This was great. So right on. And it could be said for any fashion/thought/music trend young people get in to.

One of my sisters was a goth teen.
We had to listen to her music and try not to stare at her more radical friends in horror- although some of them were actually very cool thoughts.

It is so dark. And for me to say a thing is dark means it is a super, void of light, kind of dark.

Even though it strikes me, i think it’s brave to go outside like that. What gets me is seeing people in their thirties and forties still going all out with the costuming aspect, playing Vampire and drinking absinthe. One of my sister’s friends- one of the cool ones- is now in her thirties, married and has kids and she is still “fringe”- but in a mature way, you know what i mean?

i had no idea this would illicit such a response. it’s interesting that your sister was a goth teen, i can imagine it was quite an adventure for your family. this particular poem was inspired by the many goth children who hang at the local starbuck’s - i always wonder what they will be like ten years from now. thanks for reading.
