I’ve always been maverick
a wild horse seeking higher quieter ground
watching the world from private precipice
with wary eye and distrustful gut
My inner tinkerbell
ever searching egress to escape
and when she does slip through
an unattended window and acquaints herself
with freedom
the laughing and dancing goes on for days
sometimes weeks
But she is always caught
and returned to her bottle
Unable to understand
the dangers out there
the beasts who intend her
harm
Only seeing butterflies
and sunshine
she cries behind closed doors
begging for blue sky
and unfettered freedom
I cry a little too
but I am dedicated to her safety
vigilant in her protection
no white knight
looks after her heart
or shields her from murderous fools
hungry for her soul

In sleep I invite
my mistakes to enter
Replay the scene
move the furniture
fix the lighting
rewrite the dialogue
re-shoot the scene
Take after take
but it still comes out
Wrong
There are no do-overs
no do it agains
no going back
no editing or airbrushing
no time travel
to set things right
There is only
the will to do it right
the next time…

Thoughts fly ahead
of my grasp
I flail in shiftless
winds
that tumble me
down tuneless tunnels
Blink against
an angry sun
The whispers echo
a distant hurt
with neither face
nor name
The circle encloses
in the beyond
and I watch from
the edge
Chattering teeth
shivering soul
and the darkness
comes
to eat the Moon
but her spirit
glides past
and she colours
the dawn with
greens and violets
Her sweet song
coaxes the sky
to Open
and I am reBorn

I want my quiet back
and the injustice of the
unvarnished truth
Where lies cannot
flourish
and schemes do not
survive
Where love is not
betrayal
and time is not
my master
I want my quiet back
and the starkness
of what is
of now
of tomorrow
Where regret does not
live
doubt is not
welcome
and life is
an open door

Oh say
Can you see
by the Dawn’s
early light…
can our hearts still see
our beautiful country
in all her glory?

if freedom were a wing that i could climb upon
a feathered fearless sanctuary that could
carry my soul forward
lean my eyes toward dawn
I would fly as one sparkle
across a slated sky
I would float as I was meant to
I would see

Oh! fly away man
of words
you make me laugh
great gobs of jolly
and mirth
You jeer me
and cheer me
and seed bouquets of words
not meant to grow in
the same soil
their verdant tendrils
reaching for heaven
finding mere earth
You catapult my thoughts
beyond their limits
over the stars and
to the lyrical gauzy world of
what if? why not? and will be
And I cannot feel
tethered or torn
old or pained in
your presence…
only watch my soul take
Wing
